Problem Statement: Design a mobile application that acts as a comprehensive, accessible, and user-friendly portal connecting unhoused individuals with essential social services.

Time Limit: 6 Hours ( Mobile Application, AI usage, UX)

Presentation Time: 5 minutes

Team: 4 MS HCI Students

Requested App Priorities:

Your app must prioritize accessibility, clarity, and trust for users who may have limited battery life, inconsistent internet access, and/or significant stress.

Artificial Intelligence usage

leveraging AI during the research and design process of building a mobile application. See where AI accelerates the UX process, and where limitations remain.

Design Process

This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.

Research & Planning

Conducted research using LLMs and the Internet. Reading articles, Research Studies, and Reddit threads paved the way for design questions.

Creating Information architecture, User Flows, and Personas to understand the flow and data in the application

Design & Prototyping

Create Intutive, Quick UI Interface of the solutions proposed. Created High Fidelity UI on Figma.

Implementation

Implemented Important Solutions briefed in the problem statement like accessing basic social services through an application for everyday use, required for unhoused individuals specifically in the United States.

Proposed Solutions

The resulting AI-powered scheduling app offers a seamless user experience, allowing individuals and businesses to effortlessly manage their schedules. The application was built on the assumption that unhoused individuals can use applications and have devices. Key features include:

Medical Assistance

Finds nearby urgent-care clinics based on your locality, insaurance and accessibility (e.g., user is based in bay area looking for a clinic)

Digital vault

secure virtual storage unit for essential documents like cards, tickets, insaurance cards, shelter bookings, prescriptions etc. A one-stop unit for all essential documents.

AI Document translator

Summarises documents and translates from technical details to simple text for users to understand easily.

Chatbot

An AI + human powered help system which helps individual in any way required. like booking shelters, finding clinics, finding soup kitchens etc.

How we leveraged AI: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini

  • AI provided insights from data on web, to make our case stronger.

  • We Used AI to make sense of our Ideas while brainstorming to consolidate our thoughts in a chart.

  • We used AI to understand the chatbot structures and how it functions in the various applications to incorporate the needs of your users.

  •  We gathered data using perplexity to find the population of unhoused individuals in The USA.
